The most common form of cancer of the female reproductive tract in the United States is endometrial carcinoma – cancer of the lining of the uterus, or endometrium. A hysterectomy is the only way to truly cure a woman of fibroids, and fibroids are actually the most common reason hysterectomies are performed in the first place, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service’s Women’s Health department.

Uterine fibroids, or benign tumors that bubble up within the uterus, are a prime example. According to the Sarcoma Foundation of America, the ULMS estimated prevalence rate indicates that only about 6 out of one million women will be diagnosed with this rare cancer in the U.S. annually” and comprise just 2% of cancers that start in the uterus.” With the American Cancer Society estimating that approximately 60,050 new cancers of the uterus will be diagnosed in 2016, this means that about 1,201 of those – 2% – will be ULMS. However, they are very specific and common to tumors of mesenchymal origin, of which fibroids is one such abnormal growth.

Below we’ve listed a few of these, along with the latest information about how fibroids might be connected to other diseases like endometriosis , uterine cancers, and other cancers of the genitourinary tract. Even though fibroids are benign tumors, as mentioned, they do develop using some of the same pathways found in cancers. Counter-intuitively, fibroid growth also increases in women taking Tamoxifen, a breast cancer drug which produces an anti-estrogenic effect in breast tissue, but for some reasons increases estrogen levels in the uterus.

For example, even though almost all forms of birth control pills have supraphysiologic levels of estrogen, meaning higher concentrations than the body produces naturally, nevertheless multiple studies have shown a decreased risk for fibroids in women who take contraceptive pills. Like other tumors of the female reproductive tract, we also know that fibroids are hormone-dependent and hormonally-responsive to the reproductive endocrine hormones of estrogens (estradiol, estrone, and estriol), and progesterone. One of these atypical types of fibroids even shares so many characteristics of cancer that scientists had to create an entire new category for it, called STUMP, which stands for ‘smooth muscle tumor of undetermined/uncertain malignant potential’.

In very rare cases, the parasitic types of uterine fibroids have even exhibited the ability to migrate and have been found in distant areas of the body, such as the lungs. Since most cases of uterine cancer are limited to the uterus, the open approach does not provide patients with this disease the best care possible, but does expose them to unnecessary pain and complications. Stage II: Cancer involves the body of the uterus and the cervix.

Stage I: Cancer does not spread outside the body of the uterus. At least 25% of women who have uterine fibroids do have symptoms which may include: African-Americans are 2-3 times more likely to present with symptomatic (problems such as pain or bleeding) uterine fibroids and will often develop fibroids at a younger age than the rest of the population of women with uterine fibroids.
